Dulum: The Noise Clearances
In the past, seafarers did not rely solely on the Astrolabe to determine the positions of the stars. They also depended on their intuition, learning through observing the cosmos and the surrounding environment to understand their own place, one defined by the boundaries of the landscape and the conditions of the natural world. However, changes brought about by ecological crises, whether through forest encroachment, coastal intrusion, quarrying industries, or uncontrolled urban expansion, have transformed ecosystems and environmental landscapes, giving rise to natural phenomena beyond human control. These changes have gradually eroded the long-standing system of mutual dependence, causing traditions such as ‘Dulum’ to slowly disappear.
The project “DULUM” The Noise Clearances: “Waves Crashing on the Shore, Like Sunlight Shining” is a dialogue that narrates the relationship between human beings, nature, and waterways through the creation of sensory phenomena in search of Gnosis, a form of inner knowledge that overlaps with place and resonates through echoes from within. This body of work is not merely an exploration of sound waves that form shapes within the imaginations of the Dulum community in Narathiwat Province. It also integrates the study of sound waves and their reflections, serving as a means of conveying the richness and abundance of the environment. At present, technological tools have increasingly assumed the role once held by traditional local wisdom. This work therefore seeks to reconnect and reconstruct the relationships among objects, materials, and technology, together with indigenous knowledge, which remains as a faint trace of awareness, one that profoundly reflects upon the environment and ways of life.

The working process of this project began with an in-depth exploration of the site to investigate the physical landscape and the coastal ecosystem, alongside tracing traditional fishing tools and equipment that reflect the wisdom of self-reliance. The artist focused on learning the intuitive knowledge inherently possessed by people of the sea, such as reading wind directions, observing the stars, and listening to underwater sounds. This knowledge can be compared to the navigational wisdom embodied in the use of the Astrolabe in ancient seafaring, as documented in historical manuscripts. In this project, the artist observed and documented these experiences using 135 and 120 film cameras to create objects that embody originality. These objects were then assembled into images composed of fragments of life, serving as material witnesses to both persistence and disappearance.
The initial appearance of the image from film serves as evidence of the object in its original form. It is then reproduced as a reflected image to reveal the process of repetition, one that resembles being acted upon and continually shaped by external forces experienced by traditional fishing communities. Likewise, the repetition found within the landscape reflects changes that occur not only through human intervention but also through the ongoing forces of nature, which continuously interact and contend with one another. The artist created variations by reproducing the original film through the cyanotype process, allowing the image to emerge. It was then treated with a bleaching solution and subsequently retoned using coffee, creating traces that are faded and blurred. These effects are juxtaposed with the clarity achieved through digital printing techniques, alternating between the two processes to construct a phenomenon that resembles an echo of the people.

The presence of underwater sound is documented through the construction of an underwater recording device (hydrophone), created by connecting signal cables to a brass sensing element known as a piezo. This device was used to record sounds encountered in the crevices of rocks and at depths of up to 10 meters beneath the sea. The vibrations generated by sound waves traveling through water are captured and converted into electrical charges within the sensor. These recorded audio signals are then converted and processed by adjusting the vibration waveforms. They are presented through speakers designed to reproduce different frequency ranges. In addition, variations are created through the concealed placement of the speakers in different corners of the exhibition space, together with noise-canceling headphones, allowing viewers to experience sound frequencies across multiple dimensions.
The construction of the objects and materials that shape the narrative of this project is not based solely on storytelling or the investigation of traditional knowledge. Rather, it is formed through a process of translating physical phenomena. Underwater sound-frequency data are used to determine rhythmic patterns that generate sound, based on recordings collected with a hydrophone. A distributed speaker system is then installed to create a state of Acoustic Reflection, in which the reflected sound varies according to the angles of the architectural space and the atmosphere within it. The resonant sounds therefore shift in frequency and transform as visitors move through the space. In addition, wind-speed data referenced from the coastal environment are translated into the rotational movement of the installation. At the same time, this mechanism serves as a medium for narrating the changing environmental conditions. Combined with images captured on photographic film, which act as witnesses to what remains, the work becomes a record of the present moment, preserving the ordinary landscapes of nature, including mountains, rocks, trees, and ways of life, all of which may gradually disappear within the next one to ten years.
This creative project is therefore more than a documentation of the landscape and the traditional way of life of the local "Du Lam" fishermen in Narathiwat Province. Rather, it integrates traditional wisdom with contemporary sensory technologies to transform physical artifacts and underwater sound waves into tools that reflect an environment undergoing continual change. At the same time, it encourages viewers to cultivate awareness and seek “Gnosis” from within, amid the traces of memories that are gradually fading and may disappear in the near future.
